(Science) Why do ships float?

A ship is able to float as an it is mostly filled with air. Thus, it's density is comparatively low as compared to water which does not have any air spaces. A ship experiences an upwards force equal to it weight and displaces an amount of water equal to its weight unless it sinks before that so a ship can float easily.
